Islanders prospect Otto Koivula scores first career AHL hat trick for Bridgeport

Bridgeport Sound Tigers forward Otto Koivula scored his first AHL hat trick in a 6-4 win over the Laval Rocket. He was named the first star of the game. Thanks to the three-goal effort, Koivula doubled his season goal total. Earlier this season, he had one two-goal game, on November 3 against the Lehigh Valley Phantoms.

His first goal of last night’s game came on the power play at 5:57 in the first period. He showed good patience and took the puck to the net from below the goal line. The shot went in off the back of a Laval player.

Koivula’s second goal of the game came at 9:37 into the first period. He got in on a partial breakaway after receiving a pass from Nick Schilkey and he made no mistake, sliding the puck under the goalie’s pads.

Koivula completed his hat trick at 9:09 of the second period. Kieffer Bellows made a terrific pass after skating behind the net, spotting the Finnish forward on the doorstep. Koivula one-timed the puck into the back of the net.
