NOTES AND OBSERVATIONS FROM THE 2019-20 SEASON
The 18-year-old defenseman took major steps in his second U20 season and emerged as one of the best players on a strong Jokerit team. Luoto recorded an impressive stat line, with 17 goals and 18 assists in 52 games, and was named to the league’s first All-Star. I have always liked his offensive game, but he took another step forward this season. He would often activate from the point and he looked more comfortable when carrying the puck up the ice. Strong performances started to feed his confidence and willingness to take his chances offensively. Luoto is a skilled, precise passer with very good offensive vision. He sees the entire ice and can start offensive transitions. A stable defender, he trusts his feet and has a quick stick. Luoto will play on loan for Kiekko-Vantaa in Finland’s second-highest league next season.
REPORT: JOKERIT @ BLUES U18, MARCH 8, 2019
Luoto appeared in his second U18 game of the season and was relied upon to play big minutes for Jokerit. The mobile and skilled defenseman skated in all directions and displayed notable fluidity. He handled the puck well at the offensive blueline. However, when he had limited time and space, Luoto seemed to struggle to start the attack from time to time. When there was more room to make plays, he showed great stickhandling and movement with the puck, as well as very good passing skills. The potential is high with this prospect and he has gradually improved his defensive game this season.
JUNE-JULY 2018 NEWSLETTER
Luoto is a talented, offensive-minded defenseman with intriguing potential. He shows flashes of brilliance, most often by making long, accurate passes or showing great moves with the puck at the offensive blueline. He has quick hands and he can be creative offensively. Luoto is also a smooth skater with some nice agility. He’ll need to become more reliable defensively and work on his decision making and overall game, though. Still, he definitely belongs to my list of players to watch next season.
