REPORT: 2021 WORLD JUNIORS
Mikko Petman has thrived in a fourth-line role at the World Juniors. The winger plays a heavy game and works at both ends of the ice. He has a strong stick and wins loose pucks. He has situational toughness and the strength and balance to play through contact – doesn’t mind going into crowded areas. He is a willing shot blocker on the penalty kill. In the offensive zone, he is poised with the puck and can hold on to it until he recognizes an opportunity for a pass or a shot. He has decent speed, plays well in straight lines and keeps the puck moving north – a simple, yet effective approach. He had a few scoring chances in the quarterfinals against Sweden, but wasn’t able to take advantage of them. But he was very energetic and noticeable in that game and he may well play in a bigger role as Finland takes on USA in the semifinals. He has already played almost 80 pro games in the Liiga and it shows in his physicality and reliability away from the puck.
