Virtanen played 15:53 and recorded three shots on goal in a 4-3 overtime loss to HIFK. The Winnipeg Jets fourth rounder generated some offense, mostly in the first two periods. Late in the first period, he used his stick well to cause a turnover at the offensive blueline and got into a good scoring position, but he couldn’t get enough power or accuracy on his wrist shot. Virtanen is a smart two-way player who can provide puck support to his teammates. He has good puck skills, as well as solid physical tools. He managed decently well along the boards and showed some tenacity. Virtanen’s skating looked rather ordinary in this game. He still needs to get quicker and improve his acceleration, agility and endurance. However, despite these shortcomings, he brings many good elements to the table. Virtanen could be a very solid fourth line center at the World Juniors, one who can also be utilized on the penalty kill.
