Kinnunen signed a two-year contract with Tappara in March. He played well in this preseason tournament and logged quality minutes. He had a good amount of power play time and played well on the man advantage. He distributed the puck well and had good precision in his passing. Did not hesitate to shoot the puck when the opportunity presented itself. More of a puck mover than rusher, but could also carry the puck and thus create up the ice. Could have played more physically given his size, but used his long reach well in stick and puck battles. The last game against Ässät was his best performance. The mobile right-shot defenseman has smarts and untapped offensive potential.

Kinnunen had an impressive game on the second pairing as Pelicans defeated HIFK 4-2 in the Liiga. He recorded an assist on the game-winning goal in the third period. His puck management was strong throughout the game. He gave hard and accurate passes and started breakouts from his defensive end. He did cause an icing in the third period, but soon after he made a good long pass for a zone entry. He possesses great vision and showed a high-panic threshold with the puck. He even displayed some physicality on one occasion in the neutral zone, closing the gap in the open ice. Kinnunen showcased strong four-way mobility and skated well backwards. A very promising performance from the Florida Panthers seventh rounder who was playing in his fourth Liiga game.
