Koivunen had a strong game – stood out both offensively and defensively. He is a crafty and intelligent winger who makes the right decisions all over the ice. He scored a nice goal where he was strong on the puck and showed fast stickhandling to get into a good scoring position. He can operate with the puck with limited time and space. He had a quick, sturdy stick and worked hard to win puck battles. His skating is not high end, but I think his stride is cleaner than last season and his durability and speed have also gotten better.

Koivunen had an impressive performance in a 6-2 preseason win over Jokerit U18. The winger got on the scoresheet with two goals and had an excellent opportunity to add a third one, but Jokerit goalie Joni Jämsä made a terrific desperation save in the third period. One of his goals was a perfect far-side wrist shot right underneath crossbar, giving no chance for the goalie as he was given time to pick the spot. Koivunen’s puck handling skills were also impressive, he showed the ability to create offense with limited time and space. He was also very poised with the puck in possession. He was defensively reliable, got his stick on the puck and limited the opposing team’s time and space effectively.
